Parents often ask me what a good age is to start a child off on their piano learning journey. Opinions differ from teacher to teacher, but I would say generally around 6 or 7 depending on the student (although I have taught as young as 5). Children should know their alphabet (or at least the first 7 letters!) and be able to sit at the piano without squirming too much ;) They also need to be able to take simple instructions from me. This is where the free trial lesson comes in handy. If they aren't quite ready when they come for this lesson, maybe they will be in 6 months.

Students of all ages will need their own instrument at home to practice on and, I'm sorry to say it, help and encouragement from their parents. There is simply no point in coming to a half hour lesson once a week and doing nothing at home - you won't see any progress. Saying that, we are only talking around 10 minutes a day at the beginning. Once students have a year or two under their belt and have gotten into the routine of daily practice, it's natural to go that little bit longer. Grade exams and the little concerts I organise are great for providing a goal to work towards.

My lessons include theory of music and some aural training. I also offer a performance session the week before concerts where students play for each other, enjoy some fun with musical games and get inspired by watching a video of a famous performer or two.
